It’s That Time of Year: Time for your Annual Business Review

As the year draws to a close, there’s one activity that separates businesses that grow from businesses that repeat the same struggles:

A thorough annual review.

Not a quick reflection.

Not a rushed checklist.

But an honest, structured look at the business, its wins, its challenges, and the opportunities waiting to be unlocked.

Your annual review sets the tone for the new year. It shapes your strategy, sharpens your focus, and helps you avoid carrying old problems into a new season.

Below is a practical framework to help you review every area of your business with clarity and confidence.

1. Start With 5 Key Questions

Before diving into the details, step back and look at the big picture:

  • How was your year overall?

  • Which was your best month?

  • What went well?

  • What didn’t go well?

  • What could you have done differently?

These questions reveal trends, patterns, and recurring issues you may not notice day to day.

2. Review You — the Leader Behind the Business

Your business rises and falls on your leadership. Take an honest look at your mindset, habits, and behaviour this year.

Were there moments when you were:

  • Focused

  • Committed

  • Motivated

  • Positive

  • Driven

  • Organised

  • Persistent

  • Managing your time well

  • Productive

And were there times you felt:

  • Distracted

  • Disengaged

  • Lacking interest

  • Overwhelmed

Your business performance is often a reflection of your inner world. This section is not about guilt; it’s about awareness.

3. Finances — The Health Check

Your numbers tell the truth. They tell the story of the year. Review them carefully:

  • Did you meet your revenue target?

  • Did you meet your sales target?

  • What were your operating expenses?

  • Did you manage your expenses well?

  • Did you manage your cash flow well?

  • Did you forecast your cash flow accurately?

  • Did you make a profit or a loss?

  • What could you have done differently?

Your financial review shows whether your business is running efficiently or bleeding quietly beneath the surface.

4. Customers — The Heartbeat of Your Business

Look at how well you attracted, served, and retained the people you’re in business for:

  • Did you acquire new customers? How many?

  • Did you generate more leads?

  • Did you exceed customer expectations?

  • Did you retain customers?

  • Did you lose customers?

  • What could you have done differently?

Your customer insights reveal where your value is strongest and where you may be falling short.

5. Marketing — Your Visibility and Growth Engine

Your marketing determines how consistently new opportunities come in.

Reflect on:

  • Did you have a marketing plan?

  • Did you follow it?

  • Did you create or follow a social media plan?

  • What are your social media numbers?

  • Who makes up your audience (friends, family, prospects)?

  • How effective was your marketing overall?

  • What could you have done differently?

Marketing is where many businesses lose momentum. Your review helps you close the gaps.

6. Processes — The Systems That Run Your Business

Your operations determine your productivity, efficiency, and scalability.

Assess your processes:

  • What processes do you currently have?

  • Do you know how you do what you do?

  • Did these processes serve their purpose?

  • Did you follow them consistently?

  • Do you have a sales process?

  • A marketing process?

  • A financial recording process?

  • How effective is each process?

  • Which ones are time-consuming?

  • Which ones are efficient and consistent?

  • What could you have done differently?

Weak processes create chaos. Strong ones create freedom.

7. Learning — Your Growth as a Business

Every year teaches you something if you pause long enough to capture the lessons.

Reflect on:

  • What did you learn about your business?

  • What did you learn about your external environment?

  • What did you learn about your industry?

  • Did you apply what you learned?

  • Did you share your learning with your team or clients?

Learning is the bridge between this year’s challenges and next year’s improvement.

Your Review Shapes Your New Year

An annual review is not about criticism. It’s about clarity.

Clarity about what worked.

Clarity about what didn’t.

Clarity about what must change.

Clarity about who you are becoming as a leader.

When you take the time to review properly, you step into the new year focused, prepared, and ready to build with intention.
